In England's opener against Croatia their midfielder Calvin Phillips tested the Croatian keeper with a strong shot from outside the box. We tend to hear this expression early on in games - to test someone is to find out whether they are capable of doing something so in this case Phillips wanted to find out about the opposition keeper's abilities.
