In the last 16 match between England, ranked 4th in the world, versus Nigeria, ranked 40th, one of the stars of the tournament so far, Lauren James, was sent off. The England player deliberately stood on, stamped on, Nigerian defender Michelle Alozie and was given her marching orders. Many pundits said the red mist had descended, meaning James had got so angry she couldn't control her actions.
This is how The Age online described it: 'James had, in a flash of red mist, morphed from the superstar of this tournament into a villain.'
England went on to win the game on penalties 4-2, but were very lucky indeed to get the win.
