When one team easily defeats another team we can say that they have thrashed them - maybe by four or five goals and in the Group G game between Sweden and Italy we saw one team thrash or easily defeat their opponent: Sweden won 5-0. In a BBC report on the game they used the word 'demolish' to describe the Swedish win.
Sweden turned on the style to demolish Group G rivals Italy...
To demolish something means to completely break it and this is what happened in the game as the Italian team were completely broken by the dominant Swedish side.
Other words to describe heavy defeats include 'trounce'; 'hammer' and 'receive a hiding'.
