The USA opened their World Cup campaign with a comfortable 3-0 win against Vietnam with their striker Sophia Smith scoring a brace. The BBC described the brace like this:
'Sophia Smith struck twice before half-time for the four-time world champions'.
To strike here means to score a goal - she struck two goals. Other words that we can use instead of strike include, hit a brace or scored twice.
