In the Group B match between Canada and Nigeria, the Canadian captain Christine Sinclair failed to score a penalty and the game finished 0-0 (a scoreless draw). The Nigerian keeper saved the penalty and another way of saying this is: 'to keep out the penalty'. This is how the BBC reported on it:

  • 'Nigeria keeper Chiamaka Nnadozie kept out Sinclair's spot-kick early in the second half' (BBC.co.uk, July 21 2023)

This verb phrase is not only used for penalties but for any kind of shots (e.g. The keeper kept out the shot/attempt/header).

The meaning of 'spot kick' of course means a penalty (e.g. The player scored a spot kick)
