The holders of the Women's World Cup (and fourtime winners), the USA, were almost dumped out of the competition when Portugal hit the post in the last minute of the game. If the ball had gone in, then the Portuguese side would have won 1-0 and leapfrogged over the US team to finish second in the group behind the Netherlands.
Many TV comemntators and news reports suggested that only the width of the post kept the US team in the competition. This phrase uses the noun form 'width' (from the adjective 'wide') to show how close a team were to scoring a goal or in this case, staying in the competition. Sometimes we might also see/hear mesurements such as millimetres or inches to describe how close something was to happening.
