Hosts Australia had to work hard to beat Ireland in their Group B opening match as the Irish made it diffciult for the Australians. Both the Irish Times and the BBC described the Irish performance as 'battling' which means that they worked really hard and never gave up - they battled hard.Â
- The Irish Times headline was: 'Vera Pauw’s team kick off Women’s World Cup with a battling display at Stadium Australia' and this means that the Irish team started their World Cup with a positive hard-working performance (display).
- The BBC also used the expression 'battling': Women's World Cup: Vera Pauw proud of 'battling' Irish in Australia defeat
