Euro 2012 Headline of the Day: Blaszczykowski belter ensures no exit Poles tonight

Today’s headline is from The Mirror newspaper and is all about the Group A match between Russia and Poland. The game finished 1-1 and the Polish equaliser was scored with a very powerful shot -A a belter – by Blaszczykowski (there is also some alliteration in use here with two words beginning with the letter ‘b’). The headline writers have also used a homonym which is when words are spelled differently but have the same sounds with the word ‘poll’ (an election) having the same sound as someone from Poland (‘ a Pole’). They have also used the phrase ‘exit poll’ which is a way of finding out the results of an election with the fact that the Poles were almost knocked out of the competition – they could have exited the competition if they had lost. In other words, the headline could be re-written as: ‘A great shot by Blaszczykowski means that Poland are not knocked out of the Euro 2012 tournament’.
