2019 Women's World Cup Semi-finals2019 Women’s World Cup Semi-finals: England vs USA and Sweden vs Holland: We now know the two sides that will contest the 2019 Women’s World Cup final in Lyon on Sunday: the Netherlands and the USA. The Dutch had to battle through 120 minutes against a tough Swedish side while the USA won 2-1 in 90 minutes against England. In today’s post we look at some language that emerged from those two games. We also take a look at our predictions battle and look ahead to the final (and the third place play-off). 2019 Womena€™s World Cup Language: Sloppy

The USA defeated England 2-1 in the first semi-final on Tuesday in Lyon and though England missed a penalty in the final ten minutes the best team definitely won. The American side were fitter, smarter and more clinical in front of goal while the English side were described as being ‘sloppy‘ both in front of goal and with their passes. To be sloppy means to be careless or casual and when a team is sloppy in front of goal it means that they miss chances, they fail to score. Sloppy passing means that passes to team mates go astray – they do not reach their intended targets. Check out our quiz on the language of passing here.
