I am watching the Ivory Coast V Japan game and they have just said “Ivory Coast are minutes away from opening an account at the World Cup”. How/why is opening an account used’?
Thanks
Hi Man City,
An excellent question. We think of account as meaning a bank account, the place you keep your money, and to start an account you need some money, or a deposit, so, a€œIvory Coast are minutes away from opening an account at the World Cupa€ means that the team is close to ‘banking’ some points, adding some points to their total. You can think of the group stage points as being the money in a bank account.
Isn’t it obvious that the US will win their group and go on to take the whole booty?
