Football Language:A Take One for the Team
This verb phrase refers to a situation when a player deliberately fouls an opponent to stop a very dangerous attack. ‘One‘ means a yellow card, so the player knows that their tackle will mean a yellow card. They also think if they don’t foul the opponent the attack may result in a goal, so they decide a foul is a good option. They do it to help the team. When pundits use this phrase it often has a positive meaning: the pundits think it was a logical thing to do, even though it is against the laws of the game.
