(to) Field

When used as a verb ‘to field’ means to choose or pick the starting XI or the team; the players who start the game (on the field).

  • Example: Spain fielded an experimental side in the friendly match
  • Example: Manchester City could not field their strongest side as their captain had been suspended and could not play.
