The Championship is the division below the English Premier League, the second tier of the football pyramid in England. It was previously known as Division 2 but the name was changed in 1992 (when the Premier league was formed) to Football League Division One and since 2016 it has been known as the English Football League Championship. Most people simply call it The Championship. This division is one of the richest in the world and always has high attendances – usually in the top ten in the world. There are currently (2024) 24 teams in The Championship and each season three teams are promoted to the Premier league with three more being relegated to the third tier of English football which is Division One.
- Example: Three teams are promoted from the Championship to the Premier League each season.
- Example: Southampton won the Championship title in 2012.
- Example: The EFL (English Football League) is used to describe all three divisions: The Championship; League One and League Two.
