Assistant referee

Formerly known as the linesman, this person stands on the side of the pitch – the touchline – and uses a flag to help the referee make decisions during the game, including offsides, throw-ins and off-the-ball incidents.

Example: With the new offside rule being introduced the work of the assistant referee is becoming more important.
