Transfer dreaming…

It’s the time for deals to be done, signings to be made and fans to dream about what might be for their teams. While Ronaldo’s off on move to real Madrid from man United has got most of the headlines, for me and other Liverpool fans it is the tiny hope that the Reds will [...]

In the land of ‘If’

Football can be a cruel game. It can also be a game of incredible drama. Both of these traits were evident in the pulsating Liverpool v Arsenal trilogy this month. Arsenal, the young side built by ‘The Professor’ Wenger to play a free, quick, passing game lost their European dreams, and probably their hopes [...]

That’s how to referee a football match

Pieter Vink is from a small town near Amsterdam in Holland. Last week he found himself refereeing a big game in one of the most famous grounds in Europe - Arsenal v Liverpool in the quarter finals of the Champions League. And this author thinks he did an admiral job of allowing football players to [...]

A quiet week at Anfield?

With lower league teams grabbing the headlines in the FA cup, and England’s other representatives doing well in Europe last week, it seems like it’s been a quiet week or so at Anfield. In actual fact it’s been one of the better ones of the season for the Reds.

A tale of two cups

Some clichés just have a habit of being too true. European nights at Anfield are special. The Liverpool team cannot compete in the Premiership. Rafa has no interest in domestic cups. Rafa Benitez is a master tactician in the Champions League.
How else is it that the Reds, so far behind Arsenal in the [...]

Liverpool - the people’s club?

Which side can claim the title of being “the people’s club”?
Gone are the glory days of the 70’s and 80’s when Liverpool were England’s most hated team. As the team’s triumphs have waned, the club has slowly transformed itself into a side of the people. Witness Robbie Fowler’s support of the dockers in the 90’s [...]

Thus hath the candle singed the moth…

Liverpool’s American owners falling out with each other, trying to milk their asset for all it’s worth, the manager’s position in doubt, poor performances on the pitch - players’ heads down and no inspiration - stadium plans cut back… And now, Liverpool fans are praying for a middle-eastern consortium to buy the club to save [...]

Liverpool going south

One of the most enduring cliches of recent years is how fancy London teams have tended to show their fragility when playing away “up north” on a cold wintry evening. Arsenal have been particularly guilty of this, and indeed came up short again yesterday when losing at lowly Middlesbrough. Meanwhile the championship winning Chelsea teams [...]

Rafa sees Red

A comfortable away win, with the squad players gelling well and leaving Liverpool just 3 points behind second-placed Man Utd with a game in hand. All things should be rosy at Anfield then, so how to explain the bickering that has flared up between Rafa Benitez and the club’s American owners?

Liverpool’s loss of form

Back in the summer before the season was underway, I made a few predictions: Manchester United would struggle to score without Saha upfront, Chelsea would get off to a bad start and Liverpool would end up top of the table by the end of October. Man U then

Chasing two hares

There’s a Japanese expression that goes something like “the hunter who chases two hares catches neither”, and this came to mind when Rafa surprised a number of fans and pundits when he said that his Liverpool squad were aiming to be Champions both of Europe and the Premiership. Most fans, myself included, would prefer to [...]

Demolition Derby!

It was one-way traffic at Anfield last Saturday. It’s not often a premier League side let’s in six - last season of course Reading put half a dozen past West Ham - and while it’s too early to say that Liverpool are real title contenders, it’s not pushing it to say that the wheels are [...]

We shouldn’t let Styles Rob us of pride in a decent performance

Yet another match between Liverpool and a rival title contender ends in frustration as points are lost in a match we should have won. Quite rightly, Rob Styles the referee grabbed all the headlines for a dsimal performance, including perhaps the worst penalty decision we’ll see all season.
While the dropped points may prove significant in [...]

Liverpool top, Man Utd second, Arsenal third and Chelsea…

…a distant 11th! How I would love that to be the final standings of the 2007/8 season, due to start in just 12 hours as I type this. Who knows, what with Chelsea facing an injury-plagued start to the campaign, and then being deprived of their most important players during the African Nations Cup, perhaps [...]
