The European Championship qualifiers started last week and there were good performances from England, Germany, Holland and Italy who won both of their games comfortably. However, Portugal have had a dreadful start to their campaign with a defeat and a home draw, while there was bad news for many Premier League players as Defoe, Dawson, Walcott, Van Persie and Kuyt all suffered what could be long-term injuries. This weekend sees the return of European league football, while on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week sees the return of the Champions League group stages. These stories and more all feature on this week’s languagecaster.com’s weekly football podcast. Damian: Right, it doesn’t seem so long ago since we were watching the World Cup, now, of course, we’ve got a new tournament, the European Championships kicking off and England are playing Bulgaria and Switzerland. There’s been a real movement in the English press at the moment about the manager Fabio Capello, so we’ve asked a couple of England fans their thoughts on the manager. Jonathan, how are you doing?
Jonthan: Very well Damian thank you.
Damian: OK, the European Championships are about to start this weekend, what’s your feeling on the new England?
Jonathan: The new England? Well, hopefully they will have bounced back from their World Cup – not a very successful World Cup I guess for a number of reasons … and my opinion of Capello as manager? Well, I think it would be foolish to get rid of him now but I think there was a point when most English fans were quite disappointed by the fact that he was… seemed to be quite stubborn, especially in selecting formations and players. continue

    Good

Good news for Japanese football fans as Alberto Zaccheroni is named as the new coach of the national side. The 57 year old is the first ever Italian manager of the Asian powerhouses and he will be looking to try and maintain the progress that the side made during their recent successful World Cup campaign. The former Milan and Juventus coach will bring lots of experience to the team though this is his first ever post as a national team coach. He has stated that his main aim is to qualify for the Brazil 2014 World Cup but before that there is the not so small matter of the Asian Championships taking place in Qatar early next year. continue
