The new season in Europe is a few weeks away. Will there be a shift in the power balance in Europe from the Premier league to La Liga? Well, Cristiano Ronaldo thinks so, and the odds offered by betting companies do too. They suggest that Barcelona and Real Madrid are the favourites at 5-1, followed by the English teams Chelsea and Manchester United at 7-1, and Liverpool at 10-1. Another possible shift in power may happen within the Premier League, with Manchester City being touted as candidates to break into the top four. Early days, but the team from Manchester have certainly got under their rivals skins already with their ‘Welcome to Manchester’ poster (Manchester City are actually based in Trafford, not Manchester).

PREDICTION

Last week, we focused on the MLS. LA Galaxy travelled to Kansas City and the game ended in a 1-1 draw – the score Damon predicted. 3 points to Damon and zero for Damian, who reckoned Kansas would be 2-1 winners. That puts Damon on 5 points and Damian still on 0.

The summer predictions: Damon 5 – 0 Damian

For this week’s prediction, we visit Turkey, a country that has both European and Asian roots and connections. two of the biggest teams clash, one from the European side of Istanbul, Besiktas, against a team from the Asian side, Fenerbache.

Featured Game

Damon: Besiktas 1-2 Fenerbache – Continued dominance in this fixture by Fernabache.

Damian: Besiktas 0-0 Fenerbache – A boring start to the season.

This phrase is used when people regard a player as representing, symbolising a club. usually this player has been at the club for many years, usually since his career began. Recently, manchester City have been trying to buy John Terry. He refused, and in the press he is sometimes called Mr. Chelsea, meaning that it is impossible to imagine him at another team. Raul might be called Mr. Real Madrid in the British press, Jamie Carragher is Mr. Liverpool. Who is your team’s ‘Mr. …’?

    FOOTBALL CLICHE

This week’s featured cliche is The Twelfth Man This term is used to refer to the fans of a team. Each team in football has 11 players on the pitch, but if the fans are particularly loud in their support they can help their team, they can encourage them. When this happens the fans are called the twelfth man – they have the effect of an extra player. Many teams refer to their fans as the 12th man, and fans themselves will also carry banners calling themselves the 12th man.

It seems that America is fallng out of love with David Beckham. Read the article on the former England captain’s current troubles at his club LA Galaxy. Vocabulary in bold is explained at the end of the post to help you with comprehension.

David Beckham’s return to LA after his Italian break has not proved to be as welcoming as he might have expected. First on the attack was newly-restored Galaxy captain Landon Donovan who questioned Beckham’s commitment to the team after the former England captain extended his stay at Serie A side AC Milan at the end of last season. Next up were the New York fans who made Beckham’s first MLS appearance for nearly six months an uncomfortable one in Galaxy’s 3-1 victory last week. continue

Estudiantes win the Copa Libertadores for the fourth time and Juan Sebastian Veron does his father proud as he leads the Argentinians to a come from behind 2-1 victory (his father won the cup three times with Estudiantes). Well done the ‘rat-stabbers‘. In Europe, transfer fever continues and Tevez crosses the divide from Manchester United to Manchester City, who are still courting Chelsea’s John Terry.

This week, we look at one of the big Brazilian Derbies – Gremio versus Internacional. These two teams are the big teams from the southern state of Porto Alegre and this year is a hundred years since they started their rivalry. Gremio will be hoping to get revenge after losing the last four games these two teams have played.

    Featured Game

Damon: Gremio 1-0 Internacional - No 10-0 victory for the Gremistas to cheer (their first game against Internacional in 1903) but a victory in the Gre-Nal derby.

Damian: Gremio 3-1 Internacional - Gremio to thrash their rivals!

    FOOTBALL LANGUAGE

This week’s English for Football is grudge match. To hold a grudge is to have a bad feeling against someone because of something that has happened in the past. Of course, in football a lot of history builds up between clubs and if there has been some bad feeling in a game then the next time the teams meet the game becomes a grudge match. Often these games are also derbies. This week we look at the Porto Alegre grudge match between Gremio and Internacional.

    FOOTBALL LANGUAGE

This week’s English for football phrase is to put down a marker The ‘marker’ in this phrase originally meant a line in the ground, a boundary which could not be crossed. To put down, or to lay down, a markeroriginally meant to outline your territory, what is yours. Nowadays, it is most often used to mean ‘to send a signal’, ‘ to announce a ‘presence or power’. So, in football, if you lay down a marker you have a good result in an opening game in a competition. The win shows your opponents that you are a strong team and that you have a good chance of winning the competition. A team may also buy some very famous players. This shows they are serious about trying to win titles. This summer, Real Madrid have bought Kaka, Ronaldo and Benzema and are still looking for more big names. They have put down a marker.
