• To get under way: To start, to begin

Example: The oldest cup competiton in the world got under way last week.

• Minnows: A small team

Example: The minnows from the lower divisons in England join with the stronger teams at the third round stage.

• To overcome: To win, to beat

Example: Many smaller clubs overcame their bigger rivals on a day of shocks.

• Second-tier: From a lower division, the division below the Premier League

Example: Though forest are from the second-tier their eprformance against city was still a shock.

• To be held: To not win, to draw (usually with a smaller side)

Example: Chelsea were held by lowly Southend in the cup.

• Odds-on favourite: Hot favourite

Example: Mark Hughes is odds-on favourite to be sacked.

• Transfer window: The time or period when teams can buy and sell players.

Example: Mark Hughes is hoping that he can make some good buys during the transfer window.

• Second leg: The second of two games in a knock-out tournament.

Example: Can Derby hold on to their lead in the second leg at old Trafford?

• Brawl: Fighting

Example: Stevie Gerrard has been accused of brawling in the streets after a party last week.
