As years go by, there are things that remain untouchable in “Can Barça”, one of them is the priority of the style over results. Yes, certain managers did not follow that, but their steps in this club would not be remembered with so much enthusiasm.
Last Saturday we saw two historic teams in the most famous derby (only comparable with the Boca-River), but we also saw a BIG ONE against a small one. It’s not my will to humiliate R.Madrid supporters, let me explain this with proven arguments…
R. Madrid came to Camp Nou without eleven of their players, decreasing automatically part of their potential as a team. With Bernd Schuster fired, and Juande in his second match in command, their possibilities to offer good football were poor. FC Barcelona is now leader in play and results, Real Madrid is in clear recession trespassing all kind of turbulences (saying crisis would be a fallacy, trust me). Last week’s bombardment of ridiculous statistics, daily slots on TV asking if would be a 4-0 or a 5-0… only succeeded in pursuing to enlarge this idea. But it is known all around the world, that it is not always easy to beat a small one, they got their weapons, ready to punch you right at the precise moment. Then wait and try again…
It’s a valid strategy, but it is disappointing to see a R. Madrid coming to Barcelona to concede as few goals as possible, instead of trying to win the match, which I repeat, is a classic, there are more things to win than three points. Two lines of four, individual marking on Xavi by Gago, changing Sergio Ramos from right to left to stop Leo Messi. And the objectives were clear from the first minute: defending, defending, massacaring Leo’s ankles and knees, defending, trying to counter attack, defending, praising “Saint Casillas” (the best of his team), more on Messi, defending…
Both goalkeepers had excellent performances, the same for defence (R.Madrid’s a little bit lucky, FC Barcelona’s, thanks specially to Daniel Alves, who has surpassed his level with Sevilla). Midfield was another story, with Xavi nullified and Sneijder injured, we saw nothing special, only FC Barcelona’s superiority, useless against the legged wall of the white ones. Only at the end, Eto’o (with a great headed ball from Puyol) and Messi (with a superb touch) could put 2-0 on the scoreboard.
Now R. Madrid is 12 points behind, in sixth. Villareal (the next match) is fourth nine behind, and Valencia and Sevilla, second and third eight points away.
I must admit I was hoping for a 4-0 or more, after the 3-0 and 4-0 against Sevilla and Valencia, but it was great to see such a tight victory, won with suffering and perseverance, I saw my team as a BIG ONE, and that’s better than a 5-0.
Nice article. If Barca beat Villareal next week the title race is over – in December. Is there anything that might stop them winning it?
