Bastian Schweinsteiger scores the opener for Germany

Euro 2008 semi finals, tactical battles, Ronaldo’s transfer saga and violence in Bosnia all feature on this week’s the good, the bad and the ugly.

Good

Good of course for Germany and Turkey who go through in two very contrasting games. The good, the bad and the Ugly - Summer podcast 4

The Good

It’s been a great tournament so far with only a few dull games - one was the Greece vs Sweden encounter. Favourites (Germany) knocked back a bit, dark horses (Russia, Croatia, Turkey) providing the surprise element, and good attacking football by the ‘bigger’ teams (Spain, Portugal and Holland. The games are proving popular in England, too.

The Dutch have provided some great goals already. perhaps the two best out of the nine they’ve scored in total were Sneijder’s goal against the Italians and Van Persie’s against France set up with some sublime play by Van Nistlerooy.

Also good for Italy’s Buffon, who made a dramatic save against Romania to keep the Italians in the hunt, and for Spain and David Villa who gets another against Sweden.

The Bad

Away from the Euro 2008, Brazil are beaten in the World Cup qualifiers 2-0 by Paraguay - and araguay only had 10 men!

Greece, the reigning champions, are out after three straight losses. Peter Cech fumbles in goal and surely is partly responsible for the Czech Republic going out against Turkey in arguable the best game of the tournament so far..

The Ugly

On the last show we featured Leo Beenhakker’s comments made against the referee after a late, late penalty decisiion went against his Poland side, well, that country’s prime minister is reported to have said he wanted to kill the referee (Webb) after that decision. Pretty ugly indeed.

Damon: OK, I am sitting here with Hans, a German supporter. Of course Germany were the pre-tournament favourites, so I’d just like to ask him what he thinks of the tournament. How’s Germany going so far do you think?

Hans: Well, you know very well how Germany’s going so far. We lost last night against Croatia and we’ve beaten Poland 2-0. So, we’re going fairly averagely. continue reading

The good, the bad and the ugly - summer podcast 3

Villa treble destroys Russia

Hat-trick hero, favourites upset, hosts ‘go home’ and Polish sour grapes all feature in today’s good, the bad and the ugly. Click on the links to discover more about each story.

Good

David Villa’s hat trick for Spain against Russia was the stand out performance after the first set of matches leading many to tip Spain for the overall title. One team that had been heavily tipped was Germany but they were brought down to earth by a wonderful performance by Croatia in the first shock of the tournament. Portugal are living up to their billing of dark horses by qualifying for the quarter finals after a Ronaldo inspired performance against the Czech Republic. Staying with Portugal it was also good for Chelsea as they have a new manager, Felipe Scolari the current Portuguese coach. How it might affect the Portugal side remains to be seen.
Schweinsteiger gets a red card
Bad
The host nation Switzerland are out after only four days of the tournament after losing to Turkey 2-1 on Wednesday night. Six years and millions of euros wasted? It was also bad for Bastian Schweinsteiger who received the first red card of the tournament after lashing out at a Croatian player in frustration.
Ugly
Sour grapes from the Dutch coach of Poland Leo Beenhakker as he blames the referee for the Poles 1-1 draw with the hosts Austria last night. However, he did not mention that his team’s goal was clearly offside nor that his side were totally outplayed by the supposedly weaker Austrians. Pretty ugly indeed.

Asian World Cup Qualifier: Oman 1-1 Japan

On June 7 2008,  the Japan National Team had a match in the 3rd Qualifier of the FIFA World Cup 2010 against Oman. This was the same opponent as last week in Japan but this time it kicked off at 5:15 PM in Masqat, Oman. The weather was astonishingly humid and muggy and because of the condition, every player was drained of their reserves of strength. continue reading
