Damian: As we have reached our final show the languagecaster team thought it would be good to look back at some of the highs and lows of the 2007-8 season. First up is Damon with a review of the Premier League Title Race.

Damon: The 2007/8 Premier League title race was one of the most exciting in recent times with Chelsea and Arsenal pushing Manchester United all the way in a three-horse race. The Gunners were the early pace setters but a run of injuries to key players, as well as a lack of depth and experience in the squad ensured another trophyless year for Arssene Wenger’s men. No trophies either for Chelsea though they took the title race down to the wire only losing out on the final day to allow Sir Alex Ferguson’s men to retain their title, their seventeenth overall. With the league’s top scorer and player of the year, Ronaldo, in their ranks and an attacking style that often left opponents in their wake, Manchester United were worthy champions again.

Relegation (Damian)

Some say that with the top four in the Premier League a closed shop the relegation race is a much more exciting affair, that is, any one of up to 12 teams are battling to survive and not go down to the Championship. And so it proved yet again as the final relegation spots were decided on the last day of the season. Joining the bottom side Derby were Birmingham City and Reading after Fulham pulled off a dramatic escape in May to avoid the drop.

Man U celebrate winning the Champions League title

Good

Manchester United are the winners of the Champions League for the third time in their history after beating Chelsea on penalties. United’s double of Premier League and Champions League is a fitting tribute to those lost in the Munich air disaster 5o years ago. They remained unbeaten in 13 matches during the competition and in Ronaldo they had the leading scorer with 8 goals. Worthy champions indeed.

Predictions - Damian crowned champion! (DF 231 - 223 DB)

crown

After 42 weeks of predictions, Damian is crowned languagecaster’s Predictions King. Behind for the whole race, he pipped Damon at the post with a devastating show of predicting power in the last week. He got the result correct for ALL ten games - a first at languagecaster - with two perfect scores to bring Damon back to earth with a crash. Last year Damon was champion but it all ended in tears after he followed his heart not his head last week. Damian correctly predicted a boring 1-0 victory for the Premier League side, Portsmouth, in the FA Cup. While Damon went for Roma continue reading

Hans: That would be the high point, yes.

An End Has a Start: farewell Rijkaard

barca.png

Many things have changed in Barcelona since Belleti’s goal in Saint Dennis. Last season has been the final evidence that this Barça needs to change. Now it’s easy to detail the errors. However, the people who like football can just clap or whistle at the stage.

Rijkaard has been fired. It’s true that he hasn’t managed well the commitment of Barça’s shadow stars. Therefore the team now needs a change of mentality more than a change of stars. Why do we need more players if we don’t know either how to treat or how to teach them that in the Camp Nou - it is our way or the highway. Despite losing all our opportunities by binning all our talent, Barça should preserve its game. Rijkaard has taught us that the team can move the ball as much as anyone and can make bright football. Maybe Guardiola would be the follower of Rijkaard, so then why do we need him? What has he done, in spite of being a superb mid-fielder? Is it necessary for Barça to allocate a job to all its former stars? I don’t know. continue reading

Trivia challenge!

Read the scenario below. If teams were NOT awarded points for wins and draws what DIFFERENT criteria would result in the situation described?

Answer: The team with …………………………. is awarded more points.

“West Ham are crowned champions of the Premier League, while Aston Villa narrowly beat Middlesbrough for the 2nd group stage CL spot. But it’s not all bad for Boro and neighbours Sunderland, who will play in the CL next season. Heartbreak for Derby who miss out narrowly - they’re in the UEFA cup though!

MU are hoping for a back door entry to the UEFA cup via the fair play award and surely they can build on a solid platform for next year.

Meanwhile at the bottom of the table, French manager, Arsen watches his beloved Arsenal go down - everyone knew they would right from the start of the season. They are joined by fellow Londoners, Fulham, and Blackburn lose out right at the death meaning Liverpool are safe for another season - the Reds finish just one above the relegation places! They’ll need to invest heavily in the transfer market next season!”

copa

pl

On this week’s show we focus on the last 8 of the Copa Libertadores, the Premier League as well as having a new English for Football phrase.

For learners of English there are also:

Transcript

The Copa Libertadores is down to the quarter-finals after last week’s eight games that saw plenty of goals, lots of controversy, many red cards and some improbable comebacks.

Holders Boca Juniors, despite being written off by many - including myself, are through after beating Brazilian side Cruzeiro 2-1in Belo Horizonte and once again the Riqueleme-inspired side will be challenging for the title. With Lanus going out to Mexican side Atlas and Estudiantes falling to Ecuador’s Quito there will only be one other Argentinian side in the last eight and that is San Lorenzo who made it after a remarkable 2-2 draw against River Plate. Holding a 2-1 lead from the first leg, San Lorenzo found themselves 2-0 down and two men down with an hour gone yet fought back to draw 2-2 and knock out their more illustrious rivals who were jeered from the pitch by their furious supporters after the match.

But that comeback was nothing compared to the one that Mexican side America pulled off against Rio de Janeiro’s Flamengo. Having won 4-2 away from home, the Brazilian side was odds-on favourite to qualify yet they ended up being thrashed 3-0 and crashing out of the competition. In the quarter finals America will play Santos, while Brazil are guaranteed at least one semi-finalist with the Sao Paulo - Fluminense match up. Boca will play Atlas while underdogs Quito face San Lorenzo. Though Mexican and Ecuadorian fans may beg to differ, I am going for two Argentinian and two Brazilian teams in the semi finals.

***

Yeah, it’s quite a nervy time for Manr United fans at the moment because this league really should have been put to bed before now. Man United had three away games: Chelsea; Blackburn and Middlesbrough to secure a win, which I think would have guaranteed them the title. They failed to do it, two points from nine, and now it’s all or nothing on the final game against Wigan, who themselves are in good form. Prior to Steve Bruce’ arrival, they hadn’t taken a point off any of the top four since their return to the Premiership but they’ve now drawn with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, with Liverpool at Anfield and at home to Arsenal earlier in the year. So this isn’t a gimmee for Man united and of course a draw for Man United mightn’t be enough because I think Chelsea will definitely take care of Bolton at home … at Stamford Bridge. So, nervy time I think obviously the early goal is important and if Man United can get that perhaps Alex Ferguson will be celebrating his tenth title. But my overriding emotion would be one of nervousness.

***

While the fans of Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester United will be nervously cheering their teams on as they battle it out for the title at the top of the league, supporters of Reading and Fulham will be equally anxious as their teams fight for survival at the foot of the table.

Reading travel to Pride Park to face Derby, now officially the worst Premier League team ever with only 11 points, hoping that the pride has been knocked out of the Rams and they roll over, preferably allowing the Royals an 8-0 victory. Goals are important as Reading are 6 goals behind Fulham on goal difference with the same points.

Fulham are also on the road, all the way to the south coast where they face FA Cup finalists, Portsmouth. They will also be travelling with hope: they will be praying that Portsmouth have their eyes on the FA Cup final and that their players will not be willing to charge into tackles and run all day. Portsmouth don’t have anything else to play for, as their chance of a place in the UEFA Cup via the league went with a 2-0 loss to Middlesbrough.

It really is squeaky-bum time for Fulham fans, but I think they must be safe. They’ve had a great run recently with 3 victories out of five. On the other hand, Reading are in free-fall without a win in six. But wait a minute what about Birmingham?Mathematically they can still do it if both reading and Fulham lose.

Sorry, I can’t see it. Reading, Birmingham and dreadful Derby to go down.

Barcelona's players applaud champions Real Madrid on to the pitch

Good

A huge week for Real Madrid as they come from behind last weekend to beat Osasuna in the last ten minutes to claim yet another La Liga title and then five days later, to top it all off, they demolish their Catalan rivals Barcelona 4-1. Talking of huge rivalries, the ’superclasico’ in Argentina finished 1-0 to Boca juniors who then went on to win away in Cruzeiro 2-1 in the Copa Libertadores. The team from La Bombonera are hitting form at the right time. continue reading
