The good, the bad and the ugly - Week 30

Injuries, minnows winning cups, beer thrown, referees hit. Another packed week of football news. Here are some of the stories from this week’s show.

 The Good

  • Tottenham finally get their hands on a trophy overcoming Chelsea 2-1 and ending 9 years with no silverware.
  • The Bundesliga, La Liga and The Premier League title races all get tighter at the top. Good for neutral fans around the world watching these leagues. Here is the comedy goal that led to Gatefe’s win over Real Madrid and a report on Bayern in Germany.
  • Everton win: a comfortable 2-0 victory at Manchester City to keep fourth spot.

The Bad

  • Eduardo in a horror injury.  Birmingham’s Martin Taylor broke the young Brazilian-born Croatian’s fibula and dislocated his ankle in a late tackle.

 The Ugly

The Mad

Tom Hicks Jr., son of VERY unpopular owner Hicks Sr. gets a cold welcome from Liverpool fans at The Sandon pub after the game with Middlesbrough. What was he thinking? Very different to the greeting given to his dad a year ago after Liverpool put Chelsea out of the Champions League

A little disappointed with the lack of reaction to Spurs’ win over Chelsea. Come on, this is big news!!

It is one in the bag, well done, but it’s not big news anymore after the performance at Birmingham Damian.

What is news is the season’s third hatrick for Torres. Bring it on Arsenal, and here’s to 3 Brit teams in the last four of the Euro Cup.

What are the odds now for a Liverpool/Man U final ?

Come on you reds……….The Liverpool machine is picking up steam !

Cheers Ed, I was in Cambodia (celebrating) last weekend so did not see anything about Tottenham-Birmingham, so therefore it does not count ;)

Big news that Torres scores goals and is class? Surely only for Rafa Benitez who has finally realised that to do well you need to pick your best players all the time.

With goals being scored and attacking play finally the order of the day - with Torres, Babel and Gerrard it should have always been so - there needs to be some questions asked of Rafa and his ‘revolution’.

He was brought in to win the Premier League and has not even been close yet. Misjudged tactics, inconsistent formations, overly cautious when away from home and poor signings have been the main source of this failure.

Where is the decent attacking full-back that every top team has? What about the second top striker (United have 3; Chelsea 2 and Arsenal had 3 until injury) to play alongside or replace Torres? Voronin, Kuyt, Crouch, Arbeloa, Pennant, Benayoun and Aurelio are simply not good enough to win the league. He should have bought another 2 top class players instead of these average ones and those that were even poorer (Bellamy, Zenden, Nunez, Gonzalez, Paletta and Josemi).

Liverpool fans should think long and hard about whether Rafa really is the coach to win the Premier League for the club (and I am talking about the League here which is what Reds fans should really want). This will be the 4th consecutive year under him that Liverpool have been out of the title race in March. For a club of such winning tradition, that is simply not good enough.
