Vocabulary - Week 28

  • To retain - to keep

Egypt retained the African Cup of Nations by beating Cameroon.

  • To tip - to predict, to give advice

‘Did I tip Egypt?’ ‘Uh, no. Your tips didn’t make it out of the group stage.’

  • Arch rivals - big rivals, big competitor

City beating their arch rivals in the derby away, so they’ve actually done the double over Manchester United.

  • Be on cloud nine - be ecstatic, be very happy

Dave, a Manchester City fanis on cloud nine after they beat Manchester United.

  • To have a go at someone - tocriticise, to argue with, to shout at

Last week I had a go at the FIA for not having appointed anyone for over a hundred and twenty days. Well they’ve finally done so.

  • To rupture - to break, burst, rip (especially body part)

Milan’s Ronaldo could be out for nine months after rupturing a knee tendon.

  • To blame - to say something or someone was responsible for something

Manchester United blamed the international friendlies and the hard training schedule for their loss to Manchester City.

  • Tier - Level, rank

Over here in Japan the second tier, J2 sideVegaltaSendai had four players had a drunken spree and ended up smashing in a car.

  • To bounce back - to recover (form), to improve

Manchester United will try and bounce back after their poor form in the last two games.

  • On paper… - When you start a comment with ‘on paper’ youemphasisethat the facts (form), the history show something

On paper, Liverpool have to win. I can’t see a cup upset here.
