  • To serve up a treat - to put on a good show, to entertain

Nigeria have been the flops of the tournament so far.

  • On the way out - to be fired

It looks like Nigeria’s manager Bertie Vogts is on the way out.

  • A farce - a joke, bad management

The FAI’s search for a new coach is a farce.

  • To bide their time - to wait for the right moment

The FAI are biding their time before appointing a new manager.

  • To dodge the draft - to avoid doing military service

Some Korean footballers have dodged the draft by breaking their collar bones.

  • A tie - a game or match

The team plane crashed on the way home from a European tie.

  • To mark - to show respect, to demonstrate

The teams marked the occasion by having a minute’s silence.

  • Treble - to win three competitions (e.g. Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League)

Can Manchester United win the treble again this year?

  • Weird - strange, uncanny

By some weird coincidence the Manchester derby takes place this week.

  • Speculation - rumour, future thinking

There is speculation that there might be trouble at the game.

  • A kit - the team colours, the shorts, shirt and socks that a team wears.

Manchester United will wear a special kit this weekend.

  • Controversy - a difficult topic, problematic

There was a lot of controversy over Fabio Capello’s appointment.

  • Dark horses - a team no one expects to win, a surprise package

Cameroon have proved to be the dark horses of the tournament so far.

  • To thrash - to beat heavily, to trounce

Egypt thrashed the Ivory Coast in the semi final.

  • To hold off - to defeat but only just!

Egypt held off the challenge of Angola in the quarter final.

  • To slag off - to attack verbally, to ridicule

Sean slagged off the Irish FA for beeing inept.

  • To be up for grabs - anyone can win the game / tournament

The African Cup of Nations is up for grabs as the favourites were beaten.

  • Resurgent - to play well again

Milan are a resurgent side with 5 wins out of 6 in Serie A.

  • To stretch the lead - to increase the lead in a game or league.

Inter stretched their lead after Roma were beaten last week.

  • To spoil the party - to cause an upset (at home)

Cameroon upset the party in Ghana last week by beating the hosts in the semi final.

  • Sombre - dark

The atmosphere at Old Trafford will be sombre this weekend

  • Pushover - a team that is defeated easily

Derby are the Premier League’s pushovers.

  • To turn the corner - to improve results and performances

It seems that Valencia have finally turned the corner in Spain.
