Vocabulary - Week 25

  • to be relevant - to be important, be connected to important events 

We’ll be asking whether the cup competitions around Europe are relevant today’s footballing world.

  • be up for it - be prepared, be excited about, look forward to

The fans in Africa are up for it (the cup).  bureaucracy - red tape, official administration which is often slow and unimaginativeBureaucracy! The FA in England has imposed a one-match ban on Havant and Waterlooville defender before their game at Anfield.  

  • leeway - space to move, a chance to interpret the rules 

The FA had the leeway to interpret the rules, but they decided to come down hard. 

  • the bubble has burst - the hype is over, initial excitement is finished, a dramatic end to expectations

What a bubble-bursting experience Newcastle’s 0-0 draw with Bolton was.  

  • ungracious - lacking generosity, rude, not gracious

Arsene Wenger really is very, very ungracious in defeat.

  • be looking rosy - looking good, the future looks good

Things are not rosy red at Anfield at the moment. 

  • to harp on about  to talk about for a long time, to repeat the same topic again

I’m sorry to harp on about the Tottenham vs Arsenal game, but did you see the fight between Bendtner and Adebayor? 

  • ‘Yeah, yeah’ - to show that something is boring

King Kev. The return of the messiah. Yeah, yeah (Newcastle v Bolton 0-0).
