- suspension - a player is unable to play due to a punishment
e.g. Ronaldo faces a 3-match suspension for head butting an opponent.
- laughing stock - everybody is laughing at you / teasing you
e.g. Tottenham have become the laughing stock of the Premier League.
- howlers - huge mistakes, errors
e.g. There have been many goalkeeping howlers already this season.
- William Hill - a famous bookmaker in the UK (a betting company)
e.g. William Hill have stopped taking bets on Martin Jol being fired.
- strength in depth - a very strong group
e.g. La Liga has more strength in depth than the Premier league.
- three-horse race - three teams chasing the title
e.g. Barcelona, Sevilla and Madrid turned La Liga into a three-horse race last year.
- down to the wire - have an exciting end / finish
e.g. The result of La Liga went down to the wire last season.
- have the sign over - always win, have more luck than the rival
e.g. Real Madrid have the sign over their city rivals Atletico.
- dark horses - surprise team
e.g. Valencia might be the dark horses in the Spanish league this year.
- massive game - huge / important game
e.g. Panathanaikos against Olimpiakos is a massive derby match.
- arch-rivals - real rivals, the main rivals the team you most dislike
e.g. Panathanaikos and Olimpiakos are arch rivals in Greece.
- firepower - attacking power / strength up front
e.g. Barcelona maybe have too much firepower up front.
- to edge - to just win, to win by a small margin
e.g. Madrid edged the title last year on the final day.
